3 Tips For Safely Storing Items In Your Car

How to Prep Your Car for Long-Term Storage | Edmunds

While keeping valuables in your car isn’t really ideal, if you do need to leave something in your car, it’s wise to know how to best keep these precious items safe and avoid getting broken into and stolen. So to help you in doing this, here are three tips for safely storing items in your car.

Keep Everything Out Of Sight

When you’re keeping something in your car, you’re going to want to do everything in your power to keep it out of sight. This way, if someone were to walk by your car, they wouldn’t immediately see your valuable items and justify attempting to steal them.

In keeping things hidden, you should try to place things under your seat, in your trunk, or in your glove box or center console. This way, when someone does look into your car, they won’t be able to see anything on the seats. In fact, even if you’re keeping things in your car that aren’t particularly valuable, like shopping bags, you should try your best to hide them, as someone looking in might get the impression that there are valuables in the car simply because you’ve left something in there. So while it’s best to just bring your valuables with you or empty out your car completely when you’re not in it, if you are going to leave something in your vehicle, make sure you’re keeping it out of sight.

Clear Away All Evidence

If you keep valuables in your car when you’re driving, like an expensive GPS system or other devices, it’s important that you clean out all the evidence of these devices before you leave your vehicle.

For example, some people use dash or windshield mounts for using their devices when they’re in the car. But many of these mounts will leave a ring or other mark on the interior of your car. And if a burglar sees this, they might break into your car in the hopes of finding this device. So while it can be a pain, make sure you take down any mounts, cords, cables, or other evidence that you might have something valuable.

Consider A Concealed Compartment

For those who are going to leave something valuable in their can on a regular basis, like a concealed carry firearm or important documents, the best thing you can do is to get a concealed compartment to keep these items in. This way, in addition to locking your car, you can have your valuables in a hidden compartment that has an additional lock on it, further securing your valuable item.

If you need to safely store items in your car, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you learn a few ways that this can be possible.
